Vermi composting is chiefly composting with worms. In nature, all Organic matter eventually decomposes.

In Vermi composting, worms are fed with decomposed matter and the Organic material will pass through the earthworm gut resulting in worm castings. Vermi compost, enriches soil in most natural Organic manner, and also increases the quality, fertility and mineral content of the soil. Unlike chemical fertilizers that destroy beneficial microorganisms, the Organic fertilizer is completely harmless & provide rich Organic soil that is best for plants.

Hence, Vermi composting involves harnessing of earthworms for cleaning up the environment. In the process, earthworms and microbes work together and produce vermi-compost.

Method of Vermi Compost manufacturing

Vemiculture is natural rearing or cultivation of worms (Earthworms) and the technology is the scientific process of using them for the betterment of human beings. Vermi compost is the excreta of earthworm, which is rich in humus. Earthworms eat cow dung and pass it through their body and in the process convert it into vermi compost. Conversion of cow dung by earthworms into compost and the multiplication of earthworms is simple process.

Our vermicompost is of high quality as while the conversion process we keep the heap of dung in the Neem's tree shade because when neem's leaves, small branches of neem and neem's fruit fall on the compost then it increase the quality and effectiveness, enzymes, alkaloids in vermi compost.

Vermicompost contains all important ingredients, Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potash, Calcium and magnesium etc., Micro nutrients are necessary for the plants, which can be easily absorbed. The growth of plants becomes very healthy. As a result, the plants develop resistant against various epidemics of plants – diseases. Thus it also helps to maintain atmosphere pollution free.

Due to spurt in the development of Agriculture during last 3 to 4 decades, the use of chemical fertilizers has been considerably increased. The contribution of chemical fertilizers in the development of Agriculture cannot be under estimated. But because of so many reasons, at many places, the chemical fertilizers have been excessively used which has resulted in poor, productivity of soil.

That is why farmers should be educated to use both Organic manures (i.e. Vermicompost and chemical fertilizers) in suitable combination. Many instances of physiological disorders have been noticed in human being who consumes agriculture produce grown in the field with the treatment of chemical fertilizers – pesticides.

By experience, it is also learn that mix farming (i.e. Agriculture + Animal Husbandry, preferably dairy) has been found more advantageous rather than merely depending only on Agriculture. It is not only increasing the farm productivity but also provides regular and steady income to rural – folks mainly lady member of farmer’s family.

Vermicompost prepared from cow dung has been found very effective more particularly for plantation and horticulture crops.

His / her family is well-educated and progressive one. His / Her family members are equally involved in the development of their Agriculture business. Since He / She has decided to undertake Vermicompost activities on large scale. Quantity of cow dung also will be made available from village itself at very reasonable rate. They also propose to venture for horticulture plantation, the production of Vermicompost will help them to use for plantation crops on their farm and surplus Vermicompost can be sold to other needy farmer or some other contractual company at pre decided price.

He has own land for Vermicompost production. The land has been selected and earmarked. The land is having high elevation and is not having problems of water logging. The site is approachable through out the year with Pacca / Kaccha all weather roads.

Basic raw materials to be used in the process of Vermicompost are cow / Buffalo dung and farm waste. Cow dung are available in the village and near by farms at cheaper rate. Farm waste is also available on at nominal cost in the village / surrounding farms in addition to her family farm’s farm waste. He / She has decided to use only dung of cow / Buffalo and farm waste, without any earth / dust so that, the material will be easily digested by the earthworms of special variety selected for the purpose. i.e Eisenia foetida and best quality Vermicompost can be produced.

There are approximately 3000 varieties of Earthworms existing on the earth out of which only 509 types are found in India. They are having different types of food habits, different types of living patterns and also different level of heat resistance. However, farmer proposes to purchase Eisenia Foetida & Udilous varieties that are adjustable in between 80 C to 400 C temperature (Normal Temperature of Area). This variety remains on surface of earth and eats cow dung very comfortably. The supply is ensured by her from reputed firm i.e. M/s. Aatreyas Agro Organic Pvt. Ltd., Gandhinagar.
The project of Vermicompost has not only to maintain temperature as mentioned above but also warms needs humidity in between 30 % to 40 % for optimum activities. To maintain the humidity, he / she has made the arrangement of water through drip / Sprinkler irrigation system. The water is available through out the year on farm. It is estimated that 100 – 150 liters of water will be consumed for production of every one Tone of Vermicompost @ Rs. 10/- per liter.

The earth worms’ activities will maximum remains in between pH 6.8 to 7.5 which will be checked by testing the bed – earth with strips of litmus – paper.

In order to maintain the temperature, humidity and also prevent the warms from bird & other external factors, the well – ventilated shed with coverage of roof by wire net (75/25) at sufficient height on Iron / Cement Poles. Although there exits different methods of preparation of Vermicompost. i.e. Pits, concrete tanks, plastic crates, wooden crates and surface bed on earth etc. However, proposed farmer intends to adopt surface bed method.

The process known as Surface Bed Method of Vermiculture has already been proved commercially. The surface bed method developed is almost a replica of natural conditions under which earthworms work to their optimum capacity. It does not require any machinery, can be adopted under almost all farm level conditions, and utilizes only locally available materials. The surface bed method enables any size and scale of operation. It is a very low capital cost and operating cost process for the same level of performance. In this process, a large range of Organic matters as feed materials can be used to produce Vermicast. Even raw materials having very low nutrient contents also reach a level of reasonably high nutrient contents. As compared to any other process of Vermiculture, in this process, conversion takes place in almost one-third time i.e. one cycle can be completed from 15 to 45 days.
This activity is labour oriented. Right from preparation of beds, covering the beds with cow dung / farm waste, pouring the beds with earthworms, covering the beds with funny bags, changing of materials of beds at periodically intervals, watering and finally harvesting and packing etc. needs timely and regular availability of skilled / semi skilled labours. As entrepreneur intends to produce approximate 900 MT of Vermicompost per annum, he / she has decided to keep 3 to 5 labours on monthly wages of Rs. 3000/- per month. They also will provide basic orientation on the Job Training.
